About Us
Azil Danica is a state-of-the-art animal shelter that was established in 2023 to provide a fresh start to the care of abandoned dogs in Trebinje. Thanks to the generous funding of the international animal welfare organization Network for Animals and the City of Trebinje, the shelter is now operational and managed by the City of Trebinje. Before the establishment of Azil Danica, abandoned dogs were neglected and left in a dilapidated and poorly managed compound situated on an open rubbish dump.
Azil Danica’s new mission is to transform these street dogs into loving pets by offering them proper care, regular exercise, nutritious food, and plenty of opportunities for socialization. This way, the dogs will be well-prepared and ready to be adopted by caring individuals who are willing to provide them with a forever home. The shelter has been duly licensed by the relevant inspectors in Bosnia and Herzegovina and has been registered as an approved facility for exporting dogs to the EU through the TRACES system.

In Memorian Brian Davies 1935-2022
Brian Davies was a world-renowned activist who founded the animal welfare organizations Animal Survival International and Network for Animals. One of Brian’s last major acts was, in partnership with the city of Trebinje, to finance Azil Danica. As an activist, Davies was formidable, fearless, and utterly determined. He was best known for his successful campaign to end the Canadian baby white-coat seal hunt and fur trade, during which he was jailed, survived an assassination attempt, and had so many death threats he had to leave the country. Brian also played a pivotal role in the banning of hunting with hounds in England in the 1990s, effectively ending fox hunting in that country. Brian loved all animals, but dogs had a special place in his heart, Network for Animals supports animal shelters around the world while Animal Survival International focuses on helping endangered wildlife.

Honest, fearless, loyal and determined.These a re some of the words used by people who knew Dada as a friend and as a colleague. Danica Dada Djikov began her professional career in the early 2000s. Her first job was to clear remaining mines in war-torn Bosnia and Herzegovina with her first K9 dog Cindy. This was the beginning of one of the most knowledgeable and respectable authorities in the global K9 and security community. She also trained and educated professional anti-crime and law enforcement entities around the globe. Even during her service in Afghanistan, while saving many allied soldiers with her loyal dog Alex by her side, she’d never forgotten the passion for saving abandoned animals and had a dream to one day come back and build a dog shelter in her beloved hometown Trebinje. The impact of Dada's selfless life left a big imprint on her friends and colleagues, who even after her early passing continued in fulfilling her dream, by finally making her state of the art shelter idea come true. We can only wonder what greatness Danica could have still achieved if she was still among us. Instead, her family, friends, associates, and the entire team of the refuge named after her will continue her mission.
